I wasn't familiar with the name until Peter pointed out that he was the pianist in the Lionel Hampton Band (pictured at the left of the picture) who played Newcastle City Hall on May 14, 1983.
In truth, he didn't register with me. The concert was a typical Hamp circus with the leader hogging the show on piano, vibes and drums. The band paraded around the hall and scant attention was paid by the audience to the rhythm section on stage!
However, twenty years later Peter heard him in trio format and was impressed, as can be seen by his review of the gig at Darlington Arts Centre (see graphic).
Sadly missed, not least because I didn't get to hear him in a trio setting. R.I .P. Lance
