This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Tina Turner: One Last Time Live in Concert

When faced with the choice of having to decide between the awful, the more awful and the most awful on terrestrial TV it's not a bad idea to have a punt on the Sky Arts channel. Like sticking a pin in the runners and riders in the 3:30 at Wincanton you sometimes hit lucky.

Today was just such a day. Tina Turner - simply the best in her chosen genre - live in concert at Wembley Stadium.

Filmed in 2000, the diva strutted her stuff like no one else could. The hits were rolled out, the costumes by Ms Turner and her backing singers were, shall we say, a sight to behold.

At times the stage was too confining for her and she jumped aboard one of those contraptions that firefighters use to rescue folks unfortunate enough to be trapped on the top floor of a burning building. Indeed with all the lighting malarkey going on behind her the stage itself could have been in flames. All done without a safety net and at the age of sixty-one and in high heels. Still, if she had fallen there were thousands below who would have been only too happy to catch her albeit not so happy to give her back.

The band had a roaring tenor sax player, Eugene Grove professionally known as Euge Groove. He's from Hagerstown, Maryland. Tina's MD was John Miles. He's from Jarrow, South Tyneside. John died in 2021, Tina Turner died two years later. Both sadly missed.  Lance
