Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Emily Masser with the Dean Masser Quartet @ the Railway, Stockport - Oct. 31

Emily Masser (vocals); Dean Masser (tenor sax); Andrzej Baranek (keys); Steve Berry (bass); Eryl Roberts (drums)

Tonight the spotlight was on Emily Masser, daughter of Dean. Dean's highly energetic  approach on tenor sax usually attracts many jazz fans to this venue. Maybe  it was because it was Halloween that a lot of the regulars stayed away but I was surprised there was such a low turnout for what turned out to be a very interesting concert. I must admit that I don’t hear too many singers here at the Railway as I tend to favour instrumentalists but I liked the interplay between Emily and her father especially during the Bossa number No More Blues and also Parker’s Billie’s Bounce.

Andrzej Baranek was in top form tonight and he certainly seemed to enjoy playing the tunes that Emily and Dean had chosen. He told me he was looking forward to hearing the great pianist Emmet Cohen at the Band on the Wall on Wed Nov 1.  Steve Berry got into some inventive solo work and worked well alongside Eryl Roberts who did some forceful drumming and kept the tempos spot on.

The next jazz night at the Railway is on Sunday Nov. 5 with Dave Lynane Quartet. Mike Farmer

Secret Love; I’m Old Fashioned; No More Blues; The Jamfs are Coming; Then I’ll be Tired of You; I Told Every Little Star; But Not For Me; Alone Together; A Foggy Day in London Town; If I Were a Bell; Billie’s Bounce,
