This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Album review: Geof Bradfield - Our Heroes

Geof Bradfield (tenor/soprano sax, bass clarinet); Richard D. Johnson (piano, Rhodes); John Tate (bass); Samuel Jewell (drums)

A concept album in which the band pay tribute to those 'heroes' who inspired them. Admirable indeed but, there is a problem. Apart from Corea and Blues For Stanley Cowell we are left to guess who the others are.

Loved Ones turns out to be inspired by Percy Heath. Some Other Sunday by Ellington. Caution by pianist Benny Green whilst High and Low is a triple-header dedicated to Phil Woods, Jackie McLean and Jimmy Heath.

More Googling revealed that Aspartame was for Wayne Shorter and Joe Henderson. Ron Carter is a Peaceful Giant and The Cruelest Month is based on the chords of I'll Remember April and inspired by T.S. Elliot's The Waste Land and no, I didn't get that one either although it is my favourite track!

Nevertheless, apart from the guessing game (looks like half of the blurb got lost in transit), it's still a great hard-blowing session with Bradfield an absolute monster on tenor and not too bad on his other horns either with piano, bass and drums comping and soloing with equal authority. 

All four are heroes in their own right. Lance
