This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Anne DeVere and Bill Harper

For many years Anne DeVere was regarded as the north east's top jazz singer just as her husband Bill Harper held the jazz piano crown. North east jazz royalty indeed.

Dissatisfied with life in the UK they moved to France, albeit with occasional trips back to Newcastle where they would meet up with friends and acquaintances and make guest appearances at their old stomping ground - Blaydon Jazz Club.

Sadly, as many of their friends know, Anne's Alzheimer's condition has deteriorated and she now needs 24 hour care in a retirement home. 

They were/are a loving couple both on and off stage - Bill and Anne made the Dankworths seem like the Duckworths.

Ten years ago BSH interviewed Anne which can be read HERE. It, just as her singing did, reveals just how devoted she was to jazz (and Bill). 

May she find contentment in her present residence and thanks to Bill for this update. Lance
