Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

A Jazzy Christmas is a coming!

It's become something of a tradition. A Jazzy Christmas is an annual treat. Bah humbug! Is that you? If it is, make an exception and book your seats for Paul Edis' all-star Christmas show. Joining the award-winning, Santa hat-wearing, MD and pianist Paul, will be the award-winning Jo Harrop (vocals and Santa hat), Matt Anderson (saxophones and Santa hat), Emma Fisk (violin and Santa hat), Graham Hardy (trumpet, flugelhorn and Santa hat), Jason Holcomb (trombone and Santa hat), Faye Thompson (alto sax, clarinet and Santa hat), Megan Robinson (flute, piccolo and Santa hat), Michael Dunlop (double bass and Santa hat) and Matt MacKellar (drums and Santa hat).

This year, the run of 'up north' performances has increased to five, yes five, shows. The first of them at St Cuthbert's Centre, Crook (Friday 15th December) has already sold out! The following day (Saturday 16th) at the Glasshouse (formerly Sage Gateshead) there will be two performances, one at two o'clock and one at eight o'clock. Tickets are scarce, book now or risk missing out, call 0191 443 4661. Sunday 17th sees the show move on up the Tyne Valley to Queen's Hall, Hexham. It's a 7:30pm start, call the box office now on 01434 652477. And finally, at Sunderland's Fire Station (that's the fabulous venue on High Street West, just along from the Empire), don't delay, it looks like it's going to be a sell out - call 0191 570 0007. Bah humbug? Go on, book now! Russell
