Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Suzanne Fonseca Quartet @ the Railway, Stockport - Oct 22

(© Jeff Pritchard)
Suzanne Fonseca (trombone); Jim Faulkner (guitar); Dave Tomkins (bass); Danny Ward (drums)

This gig had no keyboard player or pianist in the line-up but it did not matter because Suzanne had brought along  the wonderful guitarist Jim Faulkner - a musician who sounds better every time I hear him. He has the sound that I like to hear and his solos are always interesting and creative. Suzanne is well known throughout the north west and can play in all styles but with her quartet she has become very popular with the Railway regulars who like her melodic approach. Her repertoire  consists mainly of familiar standards and she likes to give some of them the bossa nova treatment which she did tonight with Stella By Starlight.

It was nice to hear her version of a tune that you don’t hear much these days, My Heart Belongs to Daddy. I think I’ve still got a great LP of Dizzy Gillespie called Have Trumpet Will Excite  which has Diz and Junior Mance doing great things with this number. Bassman Dave Tomkins is a rare visitor to this venue who I’ve not seen for a while but he was well featured in this quartet and together with Danny Ward they made a formidable ŕhythm section. As always, Suzanne ended the gig with Besame Mucho and brought a very entertaining evening of modern jazz to a close.  The next jazz at the Railway will be Oct 24 with the Alex Clarke Quartet. Mike Farmer

Autumn Leaves; September in the Rain;Triste; Satin Doll; Stella by Starlight; This Can’t be Love; My Heart Belongs to Daddy; Perdido; Night and Day; Softly as in a Morning Sunrise; There Will Never be Another You; Quiet Nights; Besame Mucho.
