Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Sam Toulson Quartet @ the Lit & Phil – Oct. 20

(© Pam)

Sam Toulson (alto sax); Edgar Ho (piano); Oscar Ho (bass); Ansel Bayly (drums)

Sold out concert today! Storm Babet, unfortunately, had other ideas disrupting the travel plans of some of our regulars. However, the intrepid 60 or so of us who made it were rewarded with a storming set by the Sam Toulson Quartet .

They kicked off with Charlie Parker's My Little Suede Shoes - a really impressive opening - followed by Salme til Duestrasten (composer Duetrost) and The Impossible Gentlemen's Laugh Lines

A totally captivated audience loved Irving Berlin's How Deep is the Ocean? just wonderful! The Love Theme from Ennio Morricone's soundtrack of the glorious movie Cinema Paradiso  and Toulson's arrangement of Bonny at Morn - a traditional folk song - concluded an hour of terrific music hugely appreciated by one and all.

Great to see such talented young men who have strong northern roots and have played at the Tuesday jam sessions run by the indefatigable Paul Grainger, as well as in concert at the Globe, performing  music that was so well chosen and arranged with such confidence and style and, in my opinion, way beyond their years. Check out this band when you get the chance hopefully soon! Pam.
