The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

JazzNews International

JC's review of  Martin Connolly's book, Kind of Green, had me, like the author, searching, if not in the attic, in my 'Magazinerie' which is a sacred space where magazines of all description, but mainly jazz, (the others are under the bed - joke!) are stored. My quest was to seek out copies of Ireland's, now sadly defunct, jazz magazine JazzNews (later JazzNews International) which ran from 1986 to 1990.

I unearthed about a dozen copies which I'm perusing daily over a pint. For authenticity it should be Guinness but please allow me a little poetic leeway.

They make for great reading comparable with an early DownBeat or the Melody Maker before it strayed away from its name and, dare I say it?, a lot of the writing is not unlike what we do at BSH inasmuch as they also split infinitives, miss out apostrophes and spell jazz with a capital J which is maybe as it should be.

In truth, the magazine photos are more grey and white than black and white and I don't suppose those years up in the attic did them any favours in the book, something I know from personal experience of photos stored in attics although, in my case, they did provide the launching pad for BSH but that's another story...

Nevertheless, if you're at a car boot sale and you see copies amongst the Good House Keeping and the Car Mechanics mags - grab them and, if you find Issue 1 then send it to me - I'll pay the postage (second class). Lance

Hi, Martin Connolly here. Fascinating to hear you have so many copies of JazzNews International. If you could, please let me know the date of the last copy that you have.

Plus, the article about my book Kind of Green is written by 'JC'. Yet, I sent it to Jeremy Kearney. Any clarification on that?

Please thank him for the great review.

My book is now being slightly revised, will be re-launched tomorrow. I hope I can get a reply asap, so I can incorporate the name.

Ah! His cover is blown!

Last copy I have was July/August 1989. I have all the previous ones except Issue one.

Very helpful. I had thought May/June '89 was the last, but no. Thanks. I will put that info into my book and credit you in the list of helpers.
