Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Dulcie May Moreno sings Sheila Jordan @ Central Bar, Gateshead - Oct. 1

Dulcie May Moreno (vocals); Mark Williams (guitar); Mick Shoulder (double bass); John Bradford (drums)

This month's Central Bar album - Portrait of Sheila - came courtesy of the Blue Note stable. It's a rich seam to be mined with, no doubt, many more classic recordings to emerge from vaults. The Central Bar's house trio, showing one late change with guitarist Mark Williams coming off the subs' bench in place of the indisposed Giles Strong, took a last minute look at the charts, kindly supplied by Dulcie May Moreno. Yes, Newcastle born, Kent resident, vocalist Dulcie was in town for a few days and on a sunny autumnal Sunday afternoon it's good to report a sizeable audience turned out on Half Moon Lane.

Ms Moreno opened with Comes Love. During a glittering career Sheila Jordan has been known to open with the number. If it's good enough for Ms Jordan...Falling in Love with Love, magical vocals on Bobby Timmons' Dat Dere, what a wonderful way to while away a Sunday afternoon! The little-heard Baltimore Oriole, a show-stopping If You Could See Me Now, Dulcie was on top form and she couldn't have wished for more empathetic supporting musicians. Hum Drum Blues closed out a winning first set.

The second set departed from Jordan's 1962 Portrait of Sheila album to present an eclectic selection of material - You and the Night and the MusicMy Shining HourBésame Mucho, Cole Porter's Get Out of Town, and an original composition - Take Me to New York. Dulcie confided she has yet to make it to the Big Apple. One day Dulcie, one day. An encore won, Dulcie and the boys (the aforementioned Mark Williams, guitar, the immaculate Mick Shoulder, bass, and the equally immaculate John Bradford, drums) went out on All the Things You Are.

On Friday evening (Oct. 6) there is a further opportunity to catch Dulcie May Moreno in concert at Hexham's Vault (7:30pm, advance booking essential). Russell
