Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Dave Weisser Memorial Fundraiser: Mo Scott Band @ the Globe - Oct. 11

(© Sheila Herrick)
Mo Scott (vocals); Stu Collingwood (piano); Neil Harland (bass); Tom Atkinson (drums, guitar) + Mark Williams (guitar); Sid White (drums)

As BSH's Editor-in-Chief went in search of a late night no. 27 bus and/or a notoriously unreliable metro, the show - and what a show it had been! - came to a climax with the one-and-only Mo Scott. Blues singer/blues shouter/jazz vocalist par excellence, Mo is one of the 24-carat, banker bets, be it at the Globe or anywhere else for that matter.

The Globe had been packed all night long, and as Mo took to the stage, few were going anywhere. This being a Mo Scott 'gig' it couldn't be anything other than an A-list affair - Stu, Neil, Tom plus a couple of guests in the shape of Mark Williams and southpaw drummer Sid White. Yellow MoonFeverGod Bless the Child, Mo Scott favourites all, Stu in blues mode, Neil knocking out funking bass lines as only Neil can, and, Tom, first behind the kit, later playing guitar (that's where Southpaw Sid came in), what a corking set!

Mark joined the party to play a Muddy Waters blues in B-flat, Mo once more pleading Unchain My Heart and then it was time to go on that well-travelled road trip along Route 66. The Mo Scott Band returns to the Globe on Sunday 29 October - book now or miss out. Russell
