No front-line horns tonight, just the very well rehearsed Gaz Hughes Trio playing a total of twelve numbers including several originals by band members with the remainder being tunes by Duke Ellington, Victor Feldman and Isham Jones etc.
By 9:00pm the room had filled up and the trio opened the show with an original entitled Beboptical Illusion taken at a very fast tempo which had Andrzej’s fingers flying all over the place. This was followed by a tune which I remember first hearing Oscar Peterson performing live at Carnegie Hall via short-wave radio when I was very young and started getting interested in jazz. This of course was Tenderly and Andrzej did a great job of reminding us all what a wonderful song this is.
Sometimes Ed Harrison appears in the bass chair with the trio but tonight it was the turn of Gavin Barras to fill that role and, as always, he filled it to perfection. Once again I am finding it impossible to pick out any highlights as the trio made every number stand out but I will mention that I thought a good choice for a closing tune was the Victor Feldman composition Seven Steps to Heaven which, years ago, was recorded to good effect by Miles Davis.
