Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Album review: Radhika de Saram - From the Crow's Nest

Zhenya Strigalev (saxes); Garry Bagdasaryan (drums); Radhika de Saram (bass guitar); Elliot Galvin (keys on tks 2, 7, 8); Evgeny Ponomarev (keys on tk 5); Rodion Grischenko (guitar on tks 1, 6)

The album title suggests that this was a session recorded live in an East End boozer which couldn't be further from the truth both musically and geographically as it was actually recorded in 2021 in Saint Petersburg.

However, it was mixed in London and is due for release on November 24, 2023 by the appropriately (as I look out of the window) named Rainy Days Records and features Sri Lankan born composer/bassist de Saram who, via her compositions, hopes to convey her feelings of exploring new territory as well as some nostalgic contemplations.

If this all sounds rather heavy well in truth it is although the more I listened the more it opened up revealing moments of tenderness and great beauty as well as some explosive  forays into outer space by Strigalev who played a gig at the Globe back in 2016  (REVIEW).

There's an album launch at Ladbroke Hall, an arts venue in Notting Hill that currently has an extensive and varied Friday night jazz programme, on Dec. 1. DETAILS.

Well worth checking out. Lance
