Album review: Donald Vega - As I Travel

Donald Vega (piano, composer, arranger); John Patitucci (bass); Lewis Nash (drums); Luisito Quintero (perc)

Vega, at the age of 14, fled from the war in Nicaragua and emigrated to the United States where he ultimately studied and worked with such greats as Billy Higgins, John Clayton, Francisco Aguabella and Al McKibbon.

That study has certainly come to fruition in this collection of originals.

Boosted by a pulsating rhythm section that gives it a Latin feel Vega proves to be one of the most exciting pianists on the scene today. Luscious chords,  angular flights of fancy and deep reflective moments are just some of the ingredients that contribute to the overall conception of his nomadic theme as he explores his musical journey from Nicaragua to Los Angeles, New York City and beyond.

Unfair to pick out one track but, if I had to then the feeling conveyed by Isabel - the Enchanting Nature of You would be it. The enchantment travels far.

Needless to say, Patitucci  is on the money, bass playing at its finest. Nash and Quintero complete the support. One of the best piano albums off the year. Check it out via the opening/last track below. Lance
