Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Lewis Watson Quartet @ Blaydon Jazz Club - August 21

Lewis Watson (tenor sax); Mark Williams (guitar); Andy Champion (double bass); John Bradford (drums)

In common with many jazz clubs, Blaydon Jazz Club has experienced declining numbers, particularly in these post-pandemic times. However, this evening's concert had all the makings of an 'I was there' occasion.

The star attraction here at the Black Bull was none other than tenor saxophonist Lewis Watson and by the eight o'clock down beat it was standing room only, literally standing room only.

For the BSH reader who hasn't been to Blaydon Jazz Club, it's difficult to describe what it's like when something special happens here on Bridge Street, Blaydon.

John Coltrane is long gone. Sonny Rollins is still with us, although now in retirement, Lewis Watson is very much still with us. That's the lineage...Trane, Rollins, Watson.

Opening with Yes or No, Watson laid down a marker, an exceptionally high standard, a standard matched by our tenor saxophonist's bandmates - guitarist Mark Williams, bassist Andy Champion and drummer John  Bradford. The applause spoke volumes. Yes, this was going to be something special.

Times PastSong for Keith (the late Keith Morris), No Light, No Tunnel, Watson's material stood the acid test - audience approval, make that roaring audience approval. The Promise (full on Coltrane), Autumn Song (George Adams), it takes something to keep up with our tenor saxophonist. Thankfully, Williams, Champion and Bradford had it, that 'something', in spades.

In these post-pandemic times we have seen and heard a reinvigorated Watson, it's as though he's determined to make up for lost time. Our tenor saxophonist's magnificent take on Coltrane's Liberia encapsulated what had been a memorable evening. It's very likely Lewis Watson will be out gigging again, as and when he is, don't pass up the opportunity, it's a life-affirming experience. Russell
