This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Merlin Roxby @ Prohibition Bar - Aug. 17

The second night of this year's Newcastle Jazz Festival drew a capacity crowd to the Strictly Smokin' Big Band's gig in the upstairs room at the Bridge Hotel (see BSH Editor-in-Chief's review). An early start (seven o'clock) brought about a relatively early finish, time enough to dash along the road to Prohibition Bar...

Merlin Roxby maintains a residency on Pink Lane. This evening, by the time your correspondent arrived, ragtime pianist Merlin was enjoying a quiet pint just before packing up for the night. The good guy that he is, not wanting to disappoint our party of three, Merlin said he would play a couple more. A while later Merlin returned to the house upright. It was like being at a house party gig!
