This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Single review: Slowlight Quartet - Tall Tales

After being otherwise engaged for the past seven years the Slowlight Quartet eventually got back together with a couple of changes of personnel to record, after five days of intense rehearsal, a new album. The end product is yet to be released 'in toto' however, singles are being trickled out as tasters/tempters and Tall Tales is indeed tempting.

Opening up with a cross rhythm groove beneath a powerful sound - have I missed some names from the band?! - it erupts into a wailing guitar solo that is anything but 'smoove'. Soprano sax picks up the baton and Q proves that there's lots of scope for the soprano twixt Bechet, Coltrane and Shorter as he reminds us. He's got the most beautiful tone of any of today's contemporary players.

John Hirst takes the track out with some impressive drum-work.

Bassist Ian 'Dodge' Paterson provides a solid bass foundation and I look forward to hearing more from them. Lance

Tall Tales will be available on all major streaming platforms from June 30.
