Bebop Spoken There

Ron Carter quoting Sonny Rollins: ''What we call jazz - that's keeping the world in equilibrium. I don't care what kind of music you like out here today. It all comes from jazz.'' (DownBeat August, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Album review: Gaia Schell - In Your Own Sweet Way

Gaea Schell (flute, piano, vocals); Jordan Samuels (guitar); John Wiitala (bass); Greg Wyser-Pratte (drums) + Carlos Caro (perc on 3 tks); Marcos Diaz (trumpet, piano on 1 tk)

A delightful album by Canadian born multi-instrumentalist, composer Schell. It's not going to be an Album of the Year contender but it will certainly be much closer to the top than the bottom. A recording that will probably stay in my memory long after the big hitters have had their day.

The lady plays expressive piano, gets a beautiful sound on flute and, as if that wasn't enough, composed some lyrics to Brubeck's In Your Own Sweet Way - dedicated to her boyfriend. Her vocal on It Had to be You may also have been directed at the same lucky fella!

Apart from the standards, the others are Schell originals, mainly with a Latin theme, and helped along the way by a sound trio, occasionally augmented by percussionist Caro and, on El Picacho, by Diaz on trumpet and piano.

Danza Nocturne de Flores, a solo piano piece, has a compelling, reflective mood that, whilst not sending me to sleep, evoked a dreamy reverie that didn't hurt at all.

Perplexity, as the title suggests has a boppy feel to it with Wyser-Pratte's brushwork complementing Schell's fine piano solo, Samuels' guitar solo and Wiitala's supportive bass lines.

Other numbers included: Cava dell'isola; Sweet and Lovely; Forio Rain; Summer Sea; Luna Plateada; Un Sueño de la Noche

Release date June 23 on Saphu Records SCD-0037 (usual suspects). Lance
