The opening tune tonight was Charlie Parker’s Relaxin’ at Camarillo taken at a very fast tempo which featured some great piano playing from guest musician Weatherall and also some fiery alto work from regular member Kainyek. Band leader Oakes sounded good and was using his collection of foot pedals to great effect on most of the numbers.
Out of the dozen tunes played on this gig, the ones that stood out for me were the standards How Deep is the Ocean?, All the Things You Are and Love Letters. Ed Kainyek has been a long-standing member of this band and his alto solos tonight were nothing short of outstanding. He gets a great full sound on the horn and enhances any musical situation he is involved in.
The guest tonight, Richard Wetherall, is well known throughout the UK for his versatile approach to all jazz styles and we are very fortunate that he likes to play on the house upright piano as opposed to using the electric version. He has played here many times and he knows how to get the best out of the house piano.
The rhythm section have worked on many gigs together and Steve uses the excellent team of Barras and Franks for his monthly Tuesday nights at the Railway giving them plenty of solo space.
