Bebop Spoken There

Steve Coleman: ''If you don't keep learning, your mind slows down. Use it or lose it''. (DownBeat, January 2025).

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Tim Franks Quartet @ the Railway, Stockport - Oct. 31

Tim Franks (drums); Tim France (tenor sax); Gary Boyle (guitar); John Sandham (bass).

Tim Franks' drummer lead unit is usually a quintet but, due to trumpeter Phil Nicholas being in covid isolation, it was reduced to four musicians. On bass, John Sandham filled in for Dave Turner who was also having health problems.

John did a great job handling what was a varied set of challenging tunes by Monk, Keith Jarrett, Tom Harrell, Chick Corea, Wayne Shorter, Mongo Santamaria, Herbie Hancock, and two by Freddie Hubbard. Something for everyone!

A major component in this band is the jazz-fusion guitar legend Gary Boyle who came to prominence in the seventies with the group Isotope which he formed with Jeff Clyne the bass player. He sounded great on his many solos and although he has a bunch of effects pedals he uses them very skilfully.

Tim France’s tenor sax I can listen to all night long. He has a forceful sound and knows his instrument inside out. I do hope Tim Franks can keep this band in work as it would do well now that live jazz is making a comeback.

It was yet another great Sunday night at the Railway and on Tuesday Nov. 2 guitarist Steve Oakes appears with his band. Mike Farmer
