This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Knats @ The Earl of Pitt Street - Nov.14

Arriving at seven thirty there wasn't a seat to be had. Knats' growing fan club turned out in numbers for the latest installment of a rapidly developing story. The Earl of Pitt Street isn't exactly on the regional jazz circuit and it was good to see the publican supporting the efforts of this talented young quartet. 

Other than trumpeter Ferg Kilsby the band members were, until recently, nowhere to be seen on the jazz scene. Now they're seemingly everywhere. Power, precision fusion chops, these guys are out to have fun. From Kendrick Lamar to OutKast's furious hip hop take on Coltrane's epic My Favorite Things, Knats were giving it everything. 

Relentless drive, taking no prisoners is Knats' modus operandi and why not? They can play and to coin an old school phrase: They're getting their rocks off! To close out the first set, Miles' version of Crosby, Stills and Nash's Guinnevere, with the to-be-expected Fender Rhodes sound of the period conjured by pianist Josh Mitchell-Rayner. 

The Roots' You Got Me opened the second set, Ferg Kilsby blowing considered trumpet, the rhythm section rock solid in support. An unnamed original written by Mitchell-Rayner maintained the pace, Kilsby taking it this way, then that (tremendous trumpet playing) before the hugely impressive drumming of King David Ike-Elechi took it out by way of a bout of laser-like fours.  

Bassist Stan Woodward certainly knows his way around the fretboard, more Stanley Clarke than Jaco, King David is one serious technician, it begs the question, where have these guys been 'til now?  Ferg took on Christian Scott's West of the West. It's one of the wonders of the world how young musicians are able to assimilate myriad styles, it's as if it's no problem! One last tune, a blues of sorts, all four musicians stepping up to the plate.
