Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Preview: A Salute to Humphrey Lyttelton - Black Swan Arts Centre (and elsewhere)

British jazz legend Humphrey Lyttelton would have been 100 this year had he not left us on April 25, 2008 so it is only fitting that his centenary be celebrated with a 17 dates (in 18 days) UK concert tour.

Although Humph began his career as an out and out musician dedicated to the jazz of New Orleans, over the years he progressed into more mainstream areas with an ear for all styles as became evident in his role as the presenter of various radio and television programmes as well as in the many books he wrote.

Trumpet player Chris Hodgkins has put together an all-star line-up for the tour and there are several names who have played on Tyneside recently.

Diane McLoughlin, Buster Birch and Alison Rayner were at the Globe a couple of Sundays ago with Alison's quintet ARQ and, a couple of weeks earlier Alex Clarke played a lunchtime gig at the Lit and Phil. Both sessions were tremendous.

American Pianist Jinjoo Yoo knocked me out with an EP she recorded back in 2018 and, in this company, I'm sure she'll be equally sensational. With another American, Wayne Wilkinson, on guitar this is going to be a swinging rhythm section.

Charlotte Glasson brings her baritone sax to the party as well as her (bad) penny whistles, Mark Bassey comes in on trombone and, alongside Chris on trumpet is the legend that is Henry Lowther!

This is going to be one of those nights to remember and, on November 20, it's all happening at the Black Swan Arts Centre, 69 Westgate Rd., Newcastle. Click on the link below for further details on this session and the rest of the tour - Lance
