Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Steve Pimlott @ the Railway, Stockport - Nov. 21

Steve Pimlott (tenor sax); Dean Stockdale (keys); Ed Harrison (bass); Phil Bennett (drums)

Steve Pimlott made a welcome return visit to the Railway last night with a fine backing trio that included Dean Stockdale on keyboards, a name that will be familiar to BSH readers in the north east,  Ed Harrison, always a major asset, on bass and Phil Bennett who is one of the best drummers in this region and beyond.

Steve's set list for this gig  contained a selection of well known standards, tunes by Miles, Coltrane and four of his own compositions; When by Now, Take That as a No, Lux Sonique and Notion Become.

The opening number was a Jimmy Van Heusen song Like Someone In Love which was originally written for the 1944 film Belle Of The Yukon where it was sung by Dinah Shore. A year later it became a big hit for Bing Crosby. Steve gave this a sensitive reading; his sound reminding me of Harold Land or maybe early Hank Mobley.

Another highspot for me was in the second set when Steve played the Gershwins’ Embraceable You. Steve played the verse out of tempo, then going into the theme got a nice medium groove going with Dean Stockdale giving him great support.

The final number was another well known standard Jerome Kern's All the Things You Are and there were some fine solos from all of the band which brought things to a satisfying conclusion after another great evening of modern jazz. Mike Farmer.

Like Someone in Love; When by Now; My Foolish Heart; Take That as a No; Blue in Green; Lux Sonique; Giant Steps; Embraceable You; What is This Thing Called Love?; Notion Become; All The Things You Are.
