Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Rico's Popup Louis - July 23

Rico Tomasso (trumpet, flugelhorn vocals); Will Barry (piano)

A last Popup Louis before the summer break found our host Rico Tomasso once again working with 'the wonderful Will Barry at the piano'. This evening's streamed session from Rico's kitchen featured a return visit by 'the wonderful' Will Barry, our duo would play everything from Earl Hines to Nat Cole (Oscar Moore). Perhaps it was the summer heat but the audio didn't sync with the picture. In this year and more of the live stream we've become accustomed to technical glitches to such an extent that they're easily dismissed from the mind, it goes with the territory.

Rico's love of the music isn't the only thing he has in common with Will. They have a shared enthusiasm for good beer. Imagine that, drinking on screen! If they ain't careful they'll be banned from Rico's social media platform of choice! In between slurps our duo managed to play some jazz, starting with Rosetta. Rico would switch between trumpet and flugelhorn and sing a few numbers. Ain't She Sweet taken at 'the Lunceford tempo' followed by You Stepped Out of a Dream to a number young Will introduced to Rico - Oscar Moore's Beautiful Moons Ago (recorded by Moore's boss Nat Cole back in '48). As our duo signed off Rico said of Will: I love playing with this guy on piano. Yeah, well said.  Russell
