Very sorry to hear this. A lovely person and a very good bass player. I knew Johnny from my early days of playing. When Clem Avery put a band in the Golden Lion residency at Winlaton Mill in the 1970s (my first regular gig), the band was Johnny on bass, Chas Coles drms, Clem tpt, Ronnie McClean tbn, Eric Clegg clnt and myself gtr. Happy days. Now I'm the only survivor. After that we were on occasional gigs together and over the years he would regularly phone me to chat about the music, how were things, etc. Latterly he was involved with a big band that rehearsed weekly, I think up in the Blyth area. He had great enthusiasm and always that cheerful, positive outlook.
A very nice man who will be missed, being personable and knowledgeable about his Big Band music (and restoring cars ). Both of us being bass players, we usually met with one of us playing and the other listening!
Johnny will be missed in jazz music. He told me about a person to see if this person could fix my car. I still go to the same place about my car, thanks to Johnny for that.
