Bebop Spoken There

Christian McBride: ''We knew back in the day that Emmet [Cohen] had it.'' (DownBeat July, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

A Sunday Service with Adrian, Joe & Will - May 16

(Screenshot by Russell)
Adrian Cox (clarinet, vocals); Joe webb (piano); Will Sach (double bass)

A kitchen cabinet meeting of three of London's finest, Messrs Adrian Cox, Joe Webb and Will Sach, pianist Joe's kitchen acting as preacher Cox's Sunday lunchtime pulpit. Minutes into the stream no fewer than one hundred parishioners had taken a pew. It would be a varied set list, each and every number performed with nonchalant brilliance. I Would Do Most Anything for You for starters with a first vocal for our clarinet virtuoso.
Adrian said Joe didn't know Jelly Roll Morton's Black Bottom Stomp, until this morning. Joe took a look at it, ran through it, and at approximately 1:15 played it as if he'd been playing it most of his life - amazing! Earl HinesMy Monday Date swung effortlessly, Joe's lightness of touch, Will exclaiming: Hey! as Adrian toyed with the melody, the audience exclaiming: Wow! as Joe went into a double-time section. Brilliant!

Time for a couple more, one of them from last night's Kansas Smitty's session, Blame it on the Blues. As it happens today's trio played the KSTV set along with American drummer Jason Brown. This afternoon Joe played it barrelhouse style, seeing off anyone who foolishly fancied their chances. One more, The More I See You, which just happened to be the only other vocal of the set. Next week it's a duo set with Adrian and Will, one o'clock sharp.
