Whisper it...could it be summer has finally arrived? The hordes were in pub beer gardens, some chose to be indoors, particularly at two o'clock this afternoon logging on to Joe Webb's weekly live stream set. Today, pianist Joe invited trumpeter Pete Horsfall to join him to play a Fats Waller set in the company of American bassist Will Sach.
How Can You Face Me? opened the hour long session, the trio relaxed, Joe in tremendous form, light of touch, Pete getting his lip in, Will unobtrusively propulsive, as always. Half a dozen tunes in, Will retired to the sofa to listen to Joe and Pete play the always stately The Jitterbug Waltz (Joe quipping Will would have his wages docked!). Will returned in time to play the last couple of tunes of the afternoon, first up, Honey Hush with Pete, then Joe (humming al la Oscar), soloing tastefully. In closing, Joe mentioned that he, along with Pete, will be gigging this evening at Kansas Smitty's (8:00pm). It's the Ellington 'Unknown Session' from 1960. The recording boasts a great line-up, likewise at Smitty's. Don't miss it! Alright, the trio went out all guns blazing on I Wish I Were Twins.
