The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Zoë Gilby Trio @ St James' & St Basil's Church, Newcastle - Sept. 13

Mid September, 20°, clear blue sky, sun shining. It was as if someone had placed an order for an idyllic early autumn day. A capacity, socially distanced audience arrived at St James' and St Basil's Church in Fenham, Newcastle to hear the Zoë Gilby Trio live, in concert for the first time in something like six months. Zoë and the boys - Mark Williams and Andy Champion - played two sets of familiar material, familiar to those who know their standards and APPJAG award-winning vocalist Zoë's original material, much of it written in conjunction with bassist Andy Champion.
In Walked Bud, Midnight Bell (the first of several original compositions), Leon Russell's A Song for You, In it Together (comp. Gilby/Champion) and a first set closer, Jules Styne's Time After Time, this was a half hour or so of highly accomplished performance from all three musicians - Gilby's distinctive vocals, Williams' mesmerising guitar accompaniment and ever-inventive solo excursions and Champion's imperious bass playing.

Basking in strong sunshine, no one was going anywhere. A catch up with Hilary and John, Norman, Sylvia, Jeremy and others, all were doing well. In years to come these outdoor, socially distanced performances will be recalled as 'I was there' occasions. 

The first of three Tom Harrell compositions - Moon Alley retitled Shadowed in Solitude to accommodate Gilby's lyrics - resumed matters in St James' and St Basil's spacious grounds. Rhythm-a-ning hit the heights with Champion's virtuosic solo. Red Headed Girl (from the North East of Nowhere) paid tribute to a special member of the Fenham jazz-loving congregation and to close, a good choice, the Harry Edison/Jon Hendricks' classic, Centerpiece. World class performance in the grounds of a Newcastle suburban church, you couldn't make it up.
