This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Press release: Newcastle Jazz Festival Online - August 15

After taking the hard decision to cancel Newcastle Jazz Festival at our venues around the city this year we’re very pleased to offer online events on Saturday 15th August. We’ve compiled eight artists to take you through an afternoon of live music and discussion this Saturday. 

Starting at 2pm with a concert featuring Gateshead based guitarist Lloyd Wright, followed by Durham born saxophonist Paul Booth. Neither will be a stranger to jazz fans in the North East –
Lloyd’s acclaimed band Lego Head was a Newcastle staple for some years; Paul’s status as one of the UKs finest tenor men is sealed with recent projects including Bansangu Orchestra and most recently TRYPL. 

Following at 4pm is a discussion lead by BBC radio legend Alyn Shipton on the effects of lockdown on jazz musicians. 
We’re thrilled to be hosting panellists Dennis Rollins (NJF 2020 headline artist), Paul Edis and Jo Harrop. Along with discussing the effects of Covid-19, they will be speaking about music which they have produced during the period, and what the future holds for them and the industry. 

Finally, at 7pm two artists who were expecting to play at this year's festival: JASMINE, and Jay Phelps. 

Leeds based saxophonist Jasmine Whalley will be performing her own blend of jazz and hip- hop creating a unique and distinct sound with her trio.
Then, to bring our online events to a close trumpeter Jay Phelps will take the reins till 8pm. Jay has been a regular on the London and wider UK jazz scene for over a decade – a founding member of Empirical, and having performed alongside Courtney Pine, Wynton Marsalis, Jamie Cullum and many more, his contemporary genre blending jazz and recognisable warm and projecting tone will mean this is not a session to miss.
