Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

COVID THE UNTOLD STORY

This, I must confess, is somewhat removed from our normal fare. There's more jazz in a cup of tea than there is here! However, it's entertaining, particularly if you live in the Jarrow area. Jess, the narrator who also presides over Jarrow's Gin & Alehouse has paid his dues gigging, kicking the gong around and encouraging folk to drink real ale in his pub without TV or jukebox (do pubs still have jukeboxes?) to interfere with intelligent (ish) conversation.

Irrespective of all that, the end result is that this video is, ostensibly, shot  in praise of the NHS. Nobody's going to argue on that! It's a fun thing and although Jess is unlikely to be listening in nervous anticipation as some Hollywood broad with more notches on the back seat of her limo than Billy the Kid had on his gun belt, is saying "and the winner is..." maybe, back in the day when there were three cinemas within staggering distance of The Albion  - the pub's original name - Jess and Hitchcock could have been contenders.

But this isn't about Hollywood or even Jarrow (Jarra). No, this is about the world, Jarrow and the NHS.
