Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

A Great Day in London (and outside of The Village Hotel)

Visit the Musicians Union site to see how a London photographer, Terence Donovan, recreated the famous scene in Harlem, using London musicians in Trafalgar Square back in 1962. Peter Vacher discusses the event with the survivors.

In 2010, The Whitley Bay International Jazz Festival also had a "Great Day" outside of the Village Hotel in North Tyneside. Organiser Mike Durham can be seen in the forefront trumpet in hand. Also in the picture is Cécile McLorin Salvant.
This was the 20th and last Whitley Bay Jazz Festival as such. It was reborn the following year as Mike Durham's Classic Jazz Party and, apart from this year, has continued ever since.

Here are: more photos. How fortunate it was that Art Kane was in town that day, maybe not in person but at least in spirit!

What a great day this was - we had musicians from all over the jazz world lining up to take part in the photo recreation. The UK, France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Hungary, Sweden, Denmark, Norway ...... Japan, Australia, the United States, and Chile. Several different pictures were taken, in order to fit everyone in!

Patti, I've just added a link to those other photos. What a beautiful memory. When the CJP restarts, you should do it every year.
