This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Preview: Sugaray Rayford @ The Cluny - Nov 12

Caron Nimoy 'Sugaray' Rayford is touring the country. On Moday night he'll be at the 100 Club, London, then twenty four hours later the man from California can be found down in the Ouseburn Delta. The Cluny's stage isn't the biggest which makes it an all-the-more enticing prospect that the 6'5", 300 lbs soul-blues voice will be jostling for space with his seven piece band in front of what is likely to be a hot 'n' sweaty adoring crowd.

Sugaray Rayford, born in Texas, sang in church. The family relocated Way Out West and the younger cousin of Little Walter began to gig around town. Several albums later with guest appearances by blues harp legends Sugar Ray Norcia and Kim Wilson - from 2010's Blind Alley self-release to this year's Somebody Save Me - Rayford has steadily built a loyal following and his recent Blues Foundation Music Award Winner 2019 success will only enhance his reputation.

Tenor saxophonist Aaron Liddard (Amy Winehouse) is a regular touring buddy, Drake 'Munkihaid' Shining (Al Green) supplies the smokin' organ sound and it's likely that British trumpeter Giles Straw (Amy Winehouse, Squeeze) will be there beefing up the brass section. When drummer par excellence Lavell Jones (Little Milton, Lucky Peterson) gets into a groove he won't let up all night long.

Sounds good? You bet! An ace band working with a vocalist straight out of Stax by way of Sam Cooke with something of the electrifying presence of BB King, Sugaray Rayford at the Cluny is one gig you cannot afford to miss.
