The August guest night at Dormans took a different turn to the norm in that we had Anth Purdy with his Solo Swing Jazz Guitar Show, which was well received by an audience that clearly included many fans of his style of playing.
Anth started the night with a hot swinging Midnight Jump demonstrating his fine solo guitar technique before paying tribute to Les Paul with one of his own compositions.
Anth showed his considerable knowledge of the history of swing guitar and talked about his influences which included Django Reinhardt; Charlie Christian; Freddie Greene; Merle Travis and Hank Garland among many others. This resulted in his desire to play jazz, western swing and rockabilly - relevant forms of music from the 1920s to the present day. The evening's programme included such numbers as Mockingbird Swing; Alabama Shakedown; Mr. Rhythm; Guitar Rag; Blue Moon/Sleepwalk; Back in New York Again; Blue Side Of The Moon; finishing the night off with Arthur Smith’s Guitar Boogie.
It was a pleasure to see and listen to a musician with such a great passion to keep this style of music live and for another successful guest night at Dormans.
