This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Vasilis! 21 days and counting ’til the return of the great swinging tenor player!

Swinging tenor saxophonist Vasilis Xenopoulos is soon to make his annual autumn visit to the north east. An enduring friendship with pianist Paul Edis sees Vasilis travel north to play a few dates around the region. They’ll meet up at the Traveller’s Rest, Cockerton in Darlington on Friday 21 October to play a quartet gig with Andy Champion, bass and Russ Morgan, drums, at the long-running Opus 4 Jazz Club. A couple of duo dates over the border – at Zeffirellis in Ambleside, Cumbria – then it’s on to the Black Bull in Blaydon on Sunday 23 where they’ll once again work as a quartet with Champion and Morgan at Blaydon Jazz Club.
Last year’s gigs in Darlington and Blaydon where standing-room-only affairs. To be sure of getting in, never mind getting a seat, the best advice is, arrive early. If you leave it any later than 7:30pm you may not get in! Book the babysitter now!
