Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Ray Burns w. the Peter Gilligan Trio @ The Cherry Tree - August 3.

Ray Burns (vcl/hca); Peter Gilligan (pno); Neil Harland (bs); Russ Morgan (dms).
(Review by Lance).
August in Jesmond - the residents are now non-residents, sunning it in the Bahamas without their pyjamas as opposed to the alternative of being rained upon on Osborne Rd. However, a select few of those Jesmondites who hadn't deserted their native habitat found sustenance and song at the Cherry Tree.
Ray Burns was making his debut at the venue and seemed a little overawed by it all. Nevertheless, Ray's been around the block once or twice and by the time he hit Sweet Lorraine he was well into his stride with Messrs. Gilligan, Harland and Morgan providing the perfect cushion. It was unfortunate that it was after this pre-interval number that I had to leave. A sick computer decreed I made an early departure,
Prior to this, Ray had played and sang: Out of Nowhere; Ain't Misbehavin'; Masquerade; Misty and Girl Talk (instrumental) before finishing the set with the aforementioned Sweet Lorraine.
Yes, Lorraine was sweet, almost as sweet as my Eton Mess which was delicious beyond words although perhaps a little too much after Pan Fried King Prawns, Spicy Arabian Sauce, Fennel and Shallots which was my starter (Nicola's recommendation) whilst the Gilligan Trio's starter  was Have You Met Miss Jones?
Main course - Rump of Lamb, Baby Gem, Caramelised Shallots, Honey Fondant and Red Wine Jus.
Chapeau chef!
An enjoyable evening.
Lance.
PS: Computer now back up and running although the blog sidebars are still only walking!
