This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. More on Noel Dennis Trio @ Jazz Cafe - May 20

One of the best things about the new (chaotic) road system around the Central Station and Pink Lane is that a taxi can now drop you off directly outside the Jazz Cafe and there is always something exciting about stepping out into a crowded noisy street and hearing sounds of jazz floating on the air. Opening the door to the Cafe the music hit straight away as the band were in full flow.  As the reviewer says Friday nights at the Cafe have become the place to be and this was a top-notch group, playing at the top of their game. The whole session was great and it was a real buzz to be there.
Then there was the extraordinary left-field Milesian moment the review mentions as a highlight...and it was! After a masterly rendition of Blue in Green (I would suggest MD left that note out on purpose) Andy Champion segued into something entirely different but recognisable on the double bass, Paul Edis got to work inside the piano and Noel Dennis started firing off razor sharp staccato notes. It sounded like late 60s Miles but what was that doing here? Then, of course, why not? These guys can play anything and you wouldn't go to a Picasso exhibition and expect just to see works from his Blue period. It's just that you never do go to a gig and hear a piece from Bitches Brew played live - fantastic.

You could be right, it just means you've got to play the record again. First time I ever heard Blue in Green was on a Channel 4 Jazz Night and it had a voiceover and didn't get as far as 'the missing note' so I didn't know it was missing until the album, ordered from Musicor in Durham, arrived shortly afterwards.
