Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

CD Review: Peter Edwards Trio - A Matter of Instinct

Peter Edwards (pno/Rhodes); Max Luthert (bs); Moses Boyd (dms).
(Review by Lance).
Edwards graduated with a Masters in Jazz from Trinity a year or two back, toured with the late Abram Wilson and is currently backing singer Zara McFarlane. Here, he is given free reign with a program of his own compositions. Swinging opuses that incorporate the finer aspects of modern jazz piano (and without the grunts associated with jazz pianists and lady tennis players!)
Brazilian touches in Samba City, explorative blues in Down But Not Out, Fender funk in A Matter of Instinct; Groove Swing Funk and The Runaround combine to display the talents of one of the best 88 noters to have emerged in recent years.
Luthert on bass is equally outstanding and Boyd on  drums demonstrates why he is one-half of the hottest jazz act of 2016 (Binker and Moses). On the strength of this disc, Boyd could also be one-third of a potentially even hotter act!
With 6 days to go, this is looking to be my CD of the Month although it isn't actually released until June 17 but it can be pre-ordered.
The album launch is at London's Pizza Express on June 19 and the trio play Manchester Jazz Festival on July 28.
Lance.
