Montreal born pianist Paul Bley passed away on Sunday (January 3) age 83. A forward looking composer and pianist he was associated with many of the greats from Charlie Parker onwards including Ornette Coleman, Sonny Rollins, his ex wife Carla Bley and former partner Annette Peacock, Charlie Haden and many others by which time he himself was becoming a legend.

Paul Bley was truly my mentor and I was able to find my musical voice because I studied with him at NEC. He always encouraged me to express my music, sound like myself, not like others. It was a real 'revolution' in my life.
Paul Bley and my mother are the same age. When he was in Japan, I noticed it and I told him. Then he said, 'Call me mom!' That was so funny. My parents came to concerts of us then. They are so sad with Paul's passing.
