The sad news of David Bowie's death has dominated the media (including London Transport) and no doubt will continue to do so for the foreseeable future and rightly so - the man was a rock legend.
And yet, his latest CD, Blackstar, is referred to in some quarters as a jazz inspired album. Recorded with saxist Donny McCaslin's Quartet and released only a few days ago, some may struggle to classify it as jazz, myself included, nevertheless, at a time like this genre is irrelevant. Let's be thankful that there is one more album for his fans to cherish.
This may have been a change of direction for the singer who has always avowed jazz to have been his first love and, over the years, his music has been played by many jazz groups. The Jeff Herr Corporation at the Jazz Café in September and Dylan Howe'sSubterranean album being two that spring to mind. David Sanborn worked with him regularly so the link has always been there no matter how tenuous and submerged.
To lose a legend at any age is sad and, these days, 69 isn't old.

I love his torch song version of Wild is the Wind on Station to Station. Devastated.
That's a lovely tribute to an amazing talent Lance. I can't quite believe that there won't be another Bowie album to look forward to, I was only posting on Friday night how fantastic Blackstar is. He was an enigma right to the end. x
