Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Splash the Jazz Cash this New Year’s Eve

(Report by Russell)
Got money to burn? See out the old, give yourself a New Years’ Eve jazz treat at an up-market gig near you! Jazz? Well…expect party-time function material and you won’t be too disappointed. From the Cherry Tree to the Vermont, to swanky countryside hotels, a top-class evening is yours for the princely sum of…
If money is no object you could head to the Duke of Northumberland’s humble abode up the A1. At Alnwick Castle you’ll find the Paul Skerritt Band entertaining the revellers at a bargain £69.50. a head. Over at Matfen Hall Hotel, near Stamfordham, Zoë Gilby’s trio will entertain the diners. Check with the hotel for further details. The Hartlepool big band Musicians Unlimited will be part of the package at Hardwick Hall. For the little matter of £125.00 you’re sure to have the time of your life in Sedgefield, County Durham.
Newcastle offers something for everyone. Two of the better options are likely to be at the Cherry Tree Restaurant in Jesmond and the Vermont Hotel perched high above the Tyne. The Jesmond eaterie, a year-round supporter of jazz, presents Teesside’s Caroline Bagley with the Pete Gilligan Party Band – yours for £85.00. The Vermont Hotel, another venue committed to presenting a regular jazz programme, has booked the Strictly Smokin’ Big Band to see in the new, and you can be there (fireworks at midnight) for a mere £79.00.
It is advisable to contact the establishment of your choice in advance for further details of the evening’s entertainment.
Russell.
