CD Review: Peter Kavanaugh - Whisper Not

(Review by Lance)
Kavanaugh cites Pass, Reinhardt, Montgomery, Chet Atkins, Les Paul and Bill Evans amongst the influences he dialled into. Dare I mention that, soundwise, there were also suggestions of Hank Marvin?
Kavanaugh works many of the L.A. Hot Clubs so it isn't surprising that there is a contemporary Django feel to much of his playing and, sometimes it isn't contemporary at all! I'm Confessin' can hold its own in any timescale.
A choice selection of tunes played to perfection
Whisper Not; Emily; Poinciana; Swing 48; Easy Living; Ask Me Now; On the Way to Your House (original); I'm Confessin; Jitterbug Waltz - everyone a winner!
As a band they gel beautifully, Bonebrake's vibes the Stephane to Kavanaugh's Django, bass and drums the subtle underpinning Grappelli and Reinhardt never had.
As a bonus, we have Kavanaugh's original number goosed along by Bolger on Hammond. If you want to goose a soloist get a B3!
Confessin' and Jitterbug have Shawn Osmiansky on clarinet. Rich full tone like clarinet players used to have before they gave technique the priority over feeling (no names no pack drill!).
Lance.
Peter Kavanaugh (gtr); D.J. Bonebrake (vbs); Paul Eckman (bs); Jack LeCompte (dms) + Michael Bolger (B3); Geoff Rakness (bs); Mark San Filippo (dms) on 1 track & Shawn Oshmiansky (clt) on 2 tracks.
