Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Lunchtime Jazz at the Literary and Philosophical Society, Newcastle Spring 2016

January 29 - Graeme Wilson and Paul Edis - the Music of T.S.Monk
Saxophonist Graeme Wilson and Pianist Paul Edis combine to perform a concert of music from the hugely influential pianist and composer Thelonious Sphere Monk! The last time this duo played the Music of Monk, Jazz Blog Bebop Spoken Here described is as a ‘contender for gig of the year’.
February 26 - Virtuoso Jazz Trio
Whenever this trio assembles on the concert platform the sense of fun and excitement is palpable. Their repertoire is rooted in the very best of the Great American Songbook. to which audiences of all ages and musical tasted respond with a sense of delight. George Macdonald (Clarinet) James Birkett (Guitar) Tony Abel (Bass)
March 18 - Ruth Lambert Trio
"It's all about the intimacy of the trio. Three voices, each one as important as the other"
The Ruth Lambert Trio takes it's main influence from the early recordings of Julie London's Trio. With the intimate accompaniment of Giles Strong's guitar and Mick Shoulder's bass, Ruth swings, improvises and transforms each song into something distinctive and personal.
From beautiful originals to classics from the great American songbook, Ruth sings with an elegance that can take your breath away. Strong and Shoulder transport you back to the days of the smokey jazz club with a spirit that only genuine affection can achieve.
Their willingness to always serve the song, musical taste and easy authority set this group apart from the legion of vocal trios out there. Julie, Anita. and Carmen are all ingredients in the recipe but the result is very much their own.
April 22 - Noel Dennis Trio
Trumpeter Noel has worked alongside the likes of Andy Sheppard, John Warren, Tommy Smith, John Surman, Mark Nightingale, Tim Garland, Bob Mintzer and many other top musicians and composers. For this gig he is joined by pianist Paul Edis and bassist Andy Champion.
All concerts are 1-2pm, £4.
