Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Jay Nemor Band @ Hoochie Coochie - Sept. 17

Jay Nemor (vcl/alt); Attila (keys); Dag Arne (gtr/fl); David (dms); ? (bs gtr).
(Review by Lance).
An evening of funky soul with just a hint of jazz that had the crowded room dancing and shouting for more. Texas born Nemor has a powerful voice very much in the Gregory Porter mode albeit without the funny hat. The opener with just voice and keyboard was truly impressive, an impact that increased when the remainder of the band joined in.  Nemor's alto playing was minimalistic, never playing 10 notes when one would suffice although he did have a more extended blast on, I think, Suite Soul Music.
It was the second set where it really came alive. Gil Scott-Heron the influence - The Bottle being one of the numbers that gave lift-off.
Dag Arne played some good guitar as well as fluting effectively. Attila (introduced as Attila the Hun) impressed on keys, likewise the young bass guitarist whose name  I didn't catch. David on drums was powerhouse perfect and, whilst the earth didn't totally move for me, it did for just about everyone else!
Another coup for Warren!
