Jazz Co-op @ The Globe: Folk Meets Jazz: Thursday May 7

Another successful night at the Globe, YOU really must get to one of these nights soon.  The room was full and most people were performers, but listeners are very welcome too.  There was:

 Minnie Fraser and Joe  - Minnie sang The Blacksmith, followed by folk tunes on fiddle and guitar.

John and Colin – folk songs with guitars, including a chorus in Swahili, why did no-one join in I wonder?

Robbie, Mark and Jim – from the Newcastle Uni folk degree, excellent musicians in both folk and jazz, a Morris tune on melodeon, Old Timey Americana tunes and a neat version of Georgia Brown.

Carrie – A great self-penned song and a folk song The Parting Glass

Sheila – 2 well-sung songs, every word crystal clear, rock singers on television please note!

John Cram – a regular performer in folk clubs, a beautiful tune on viola and a song of lost love.

Mostly folk so far but the jazzers did us proud, even without a drummer.  Dave Parker (bass); Jeff Smith (tenor sax); Fiona Finden (sax and vocals) with God Bless The Child; Lester Leaps In; Autumn Leaves.

Then come the 2^nd half and another folk band popped in, The Cherry Pickers, various instruments, including knackers (I’m not swearing, they’re bones used as percussion), a washboard, and a kazoo, as well as a small banjo. An exciting sound.

I had to leave early and reluctantly for the Metro, just as each person was doing 1 more song or tune.  Sorry about the lack of surnames, but it’s not that sort of event, it’s friendly and informal, so that’s my excuse for any failings in this review.
