The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. CD Review: Ben Cox Band - This Waiting Game

Ben Cox (vcl); Jamie Safiruddin (keys/md);  Will Glaser (dms/perc); Flo Moore (bs); Adam Chatterton (tpt/flug/bkg vcl); Kirk Elhinney (gtr/bkg vcl); Claire Martin (vcl on Berkeley Square); Emily Dankworth ( vcl on Happy Madness).
As Tony Bennett famously once said, "All of a sudden you had to write your own songs, as if Jerome Kern and Porter weren't good enough anymore."
Not surprisingly, the Beatles' And I love Her and Nightingale Sang are (for me) the outstanding tracks on this CD. The addition of Claire Martin on the latter track lifts it but, with repeated listening, the originals by Salfiruddin come into their own so maybe me and Tony got it wrong - maybe!
Ben Cox is being acclaimed by such peers as Jamie Cullum, Ian Shaw and Lianne Carroll - and they know a thing or two when it comes to singing.
A very well produced and listenable album that should receive lots of plays on the Jazz FM/Smooth radio stations. It didn't, initially,  quite tick all my boxes.  Having said that, in fairness, there are moments when Cox's husky vocals struck a chord and maybe, with prolonged listening, it may grow on me.
Ignore the above! I've played it again - and again and it's well worth checking out!
