Pilgrim St. Set @ Hoochie Coochie. April 17

Richard Burns (tpt); Gary Turner (ten); Paul Edis (pno); Paul Susans (bs. gtr); Rob Walker (dms).

In contrast to last month's "select audience" this time round the joint was jumpin'. Of course it was Easter Eve which is as good an excuse as any to get bladdered - the Hoochie slogan "Every true music believer now has their church" certainly rung true tonight.
The band were loud and the congregation even louder. If you want sepulchral silence then go to a church with a steeple. Personally, I find a boisterous audience makes for a more relaxed atmosphere on stage. If you can here a pin drop then you can also hear a clanger dropped forcing the musicians to play safe and take less chances.
The Pilgrim St Set certainly took their chances and by and large they came off. I had a few reservations about the free section of a Frank Zappa number but that's probably due to my sometimes tunnelled vision approach to music.
On trumpet, Richard Burns, the tallest Australian in town, introduced a number as being by Cannonball Adelaide - I half expected the next piece to be by Victoria Feldman or Kathy Hobart! As it was the next piece was by bass guitarist Susans and titled Ventouse (google it!) - he certainly delivered..
Susans and drummer Walker were at the hub of everything driving the others along relentlessly - funksters to the finish.
Turner and Edis never give less than 101% with Gary completely re-designing Adolphe Sax's conception of his invention and Paul producing a multitude of keyboard sounds. Paul's original composition, We Don't Get Along certainly didn't apply to this situation - they gelled!
Down front we even had a couple dancing to an Ornette Coleman number, and why not? Music and dancing have always complemented each other and the more complex the music the more challenging it is for the dancers to interpret. These two interpreted!
The Pilgrim St. Set are at Hoochie on the third Thursday of each month so see you there on May 22.
Lance.
