CD Review: Vasilis Xenopoulos - The Wind Machine.

Vasilis Xenopoulos (ten); Steve Fishwick (tpt); Nigel Price (gtr); Bill Mudge (Hammond); Pete Cater (dms).
(Review by Lance).
Vasy crops up so frequently on this site that I no longer have to name check the spelling! The recent Wind Machine gigs at The Bridge Hotel, Newcastle and St. Cuthbert's Centre, Crook, created a lot of favourable waves and although the personnel, with the exception of Mr X, is totally different the tunes are the same i.e. swinging small group arrangements of big band classics.

Martin Shaw (live)? Steve Fishwick (CD)? you pays your money and you makes your choice - both top class players. Likewise Pete Cater (CD) Matt Home (live). The main difference is piano and bass (live) as opposed to B3 and guitar (CD).
Personally I lean towards the piano bass set up of the live gigs but it also has to be said that the Hammond does help create the big band sound they sought plus having Nigel Price on guitar is a bonus ball at any session.
Four Brothers, as I commented in my review of the Splinter gig at the Bridge, is just as amazing here and The Groove Merchant another one to savour. Tin Tin Deo; Corner Pocket; The Fun Club; The Wind Machine; Prelude to a Kiss/Sophisticated Lady; Splanky and Playhouse are the other titles with ne'er a dud amongst them!
A fitting reminder of a Greek who came blowing riffs.
Got to be among the CD of the year lists!
