This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. EP Review: Nicky Schrire - To The Spring.

New York based Nicky Schrire has issued this EP as a follow–up to last year’s CD Space And Time.  The EP consists of 6 songs, music, lyrics, arrangements and production all by Ms Schrire, who trained as a jazz singer and who has performed in the USA and various parts of the world.  The songs do not have standard jazz arrangements however, but are more fragmented, yet with lots of solos for the pianist who is well up to the job.  
The voice is sweet and light, with operatic effects rather than scat improvisation or vocalese.  For instance, most of the songs are sung more or less straight, with the second half of the performance done in wordless, but operatic style. I enjoyed the performances, although I think this technique would have sounded overdone on a full length CD.  Someone told me that he found the songs too ‘emotional’ but I consider that Ms Schrire just keeps to the near side of acceptability.
Traveler is all about being on the road and separated from someone you love; Your Love has Ms Schrire  harmonising with herself, showing hints of the singing of Joni Mitchell; To The Spring begins with a fine instrumental from piano and bass, and allows our singer to show her wide vocal range; Fall Apart  is an adventurous, heartfelt song which reminded me of the singing of local band Iceni; Father is an interesting reflection about a father picking fruit from his trees; and Give It Away concerns warnings about giving love away too easily.
If you fancy a trip to the USA, there is an EP release performance on March 25th at the Cornelia Street Cafe, Greenwich Village, NY, with different musicians, and the EP release date is today, March 11.  (digital only).
