This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) CD Review: GoGo Penguin - v.20

When I first heard of GoGo Penguin,  I assumed it was another chocolate covered biscuit designed for those on the run. In fact, they are Manchester based modern piano trio named after a friend’s stuffed aquatic flightless bird from  the southern hemisphere.
 The album begins impressively with a Murmuration (of penguins?) a haunting atmospheric start builds into a cracking finale as one imagines the birds swarming overhead. The next track is not one for vegetarians Garden Dog Barbecue but it is one for those who enjoy exciting driving trio play. Kamaloka has a gentle melody highlighting Illingworth’s hypnotic piano style. Fort has a almost ‘tubular bells’ feel to it with Turner’s synthesised drums being used to great effect. One Percent refers to those who control 99% of the wealth so not surprisingly it displays a degree of controlled aggression. Home has a  lovely rolling melody driven by Blaka ‘s bass. The Letter is certainly one to write home about, a gentle brooding ballad .  To Drown In You (I thought penguins could swim?)  is a lively tour de force with a very catchy theme. Shock and Awe  rather than being an explosive violent number is in fact a short mournful harrowing piece but the album  finishes  on a high with the lively optimistic  Hopopono.
The more I listen to the album the more I seem to enjoy it. This trio really do play as a single unit so rather than getting lots of  individual solos the band plays as a wonderful collaborative ensemble each complementing their  fellow band members exponentially  so that the sum is truly  greater than the parts. I didn’t want to say it, but I am afraid I am going to have to P P Pick up a GoGo Penguin today.
