This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Brian Carrick and the Heritage Hall Stompers @ Ashington Jazz Club. March 5

With hindsight this wonderful evening should have been advertised as "An Audience with Brian Carrick" for as the March meeting developed not only were we witness to an amazing rendition of New Orleans Classic Jazz played by a group of committed and exceptionally gifted musicians who recreated the sounds and colour of New Orleans but we also got a Jazz Historian familiar with this vibrant city of the Deep South. The concert/recital demonstrated the origins and magnetism of this American Heritage.
Brian took us on a tour through the streets of the City with anecdotal tales of its attractions, dance and music venues and most important of all the characters and musicians of this golden age when Jazz was born. This had great appeal for our members and was an education which enhanced the entertainment. It is amazing that a group of fine musicians from the North East of England can produce this brand so skillfully and as the song title says "Take me/us back to New Orleans".

Needless to say the audience were totally won over by the Stompers and applauded  vigorously with real enthusiasm and a standing ovation at the end of a memorable night in the annals of AJC.
PROGRAMME - What a friend we have in Jesus (Dedicated to the two NE Musicians who sadly passed away recently), Shake it and Break it; When You and I Were young Maggie; Lover; Lord, Lord, you Sure Been Good to me; Just a Love Nest on a Farm; Dippermouth Blues; Down in Jungle Town; Down on the Delta; Burgundy St. Blues; St. Phillips Parade; I Get the Blues When it Rains; Panama Rag.
I hesitate to highlight any band members who all played an intricate part in bringing this evening to Ashington but if I must my favourite has to be Burgundy St. Blues as Brian with his exquisite Clarinet added poetic lyrics which I’d not heard before.  Thank you gentlemen for this historic evening and may you all continue PRESERVING  this music for our delight. Good luck in all your future engagements.
